Roof Types
The roofing industry has many different types of roofing materials and roof systems to choose from. Here's a list of roofing products and some of their qualities:

  • Asphalt Shingles: This is probably the most common and the least expensive shingle on the market today. There typical life span is 15 - 20 years. They are relatively thin and are made from fiberglass and asphalt.
  • Dimensional Shingles: These shingles are made from the same materials as Asphalt shingles but are designed to give your roof a more texured look. They are thicker and can last twice as long as the common asphalt shingle.
  • Cedar Shake or Wood Shingles:These shingles are made from treated wood. They are designed to give the roof  a rustic look. This roof type is very popular in the northern U.S. Wood shingles last about the same amount of time as asphalt shingles and are quite exspensive. You should note that they also are less fire resistant than other roofing types.
  • Clay Tiles: This type of roofing material is made from clay and is quite heavy. They can also be made from synthetic materials that make their weight much lighter. The clay tile is mostly cosmetic and covers the actual roof system. The lifespan of Clay tiles can be between 20 - 50 years.
  • Metal Roofs: This type of roofing is lightweight and very durable. Metal roofing will typically last 20 - 50 years, there are different styles and a large color selection is available.
  • Slate Roofs: This type of roofing is very heavy, very durable and very expensive. Slate roofing can last up to 100 years. In fact, reinforcing maybe necessary to handle the additonal weight.
